Bred and raced by Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms in Kentucky, Marquetry first competed in england. Trained by Guy Harwood, he showed promise as a two and three year old. Returning to America, he really started making history. Saddled by Bobby Frankel, he won the 1991 Hollywood Gold Cup (G1), New England Classic, the 1992 Eddie Read H (G1), and the 1993 Meadowlands H (G1), San Antonio H (G2), Mervyn LeRoy H (G2) and Bel Air H (G2) for total earnings of $2,857,886 on both dirt and turf.
Retiring to stud in 1994, he stood at the Vinery in Midway, Kentucky and later, Stonewall Farm in Versailles, and Stonewall Farm in Ocala, Florida. He distinguished himself yet again through two Breeders' Cup Sprint winning sons and Eclipse Award Champion Sprinters, Artax in 1999 and Squirtle Squirt in 2001.
In 2010 he retired from stud due to declining fertility. Old Friends is grateful to Audrey and Richard Haisfield and Stonewall Stallions for donating Marquertry, who joined our roster of champions in the summer of 2010.
